Stedelijk Museum Aankopen

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam commissioned us to design a digital publication for the exhibition When Things Are Being. For this exhibition, makers living and working in the Netherlands, were invited to respond to an open call. A jury made a selection and this lead to a group show, our publication was the catalog for the show as well as providing deeper insights and information about each individual work, artist, and concept. In addition to this the book featured essay by the artistic director and the curators.

Designing a digital book was a challenge, as this is not something we usually do. However, we saw this opportunity to create a book that is not confined by financial (production wise), or that could play with complexity that would be too much for a physical book. But of course for us a publication wouldn’t be a publication if it didn’t incorporate an attribute that is specific to a printed book.

That is how the idea of the “see through” effect came up. As if it was printed on very thin, so-called Bible paper.

In addition, this project gave us the opportunity to reflect on what it means to read, how one reads, and how that experience changes based upon which media is used.

The digital book can be downloaded from the Stedelijk Museum website.
